Celebrating A Great Publisher

As you all know, I feel honored and blessed to write for Pelican Book Group - a publisher of Christian fiction, romance and young adult titles. I'm passionate about PBG, its staff, and the opportunities Pelican has given me to grow and bloom as an author.

Well, there's great news to share. This week, Pelican embraced the avenue of book distribution in a huge way. Read all about it, and I hope and pray it's God's will that the stories He gives me to tell will find favor, and shelf space/reader hearts in the exciting times to come:

Pelican Book Group announces a distribution partnership with the second-largest distributor in the U.S.

Aztec, NM—Pelican Book Group has announced a distribution partnership with Independent Publishers Group (IPG), the second largest book distributor in the U.S. The partnership will expand Pelican’s distribution of e-books and paperbacks, offering longer print runs on select Pelican titles. Nicola Martinez, Editor-in-chief for Pelican says IPG’s 40-year track record made an impression.

“I decided to sign with IPG because of the conversations I had with Mary Rowles, Publisher Development Manager at IPG,” says Martinez. “I was not only impressed with what I felt IPG could do for our catalog, but also with the questions that were asked of me and the entire IPG side of the vetting process. As a publisher, I needed to know that a distributor would do more than just warehouse our inventory and fulfill orders. I was looking for a company that was also an advocate and a good steward of their own business. The fact that IPG is selective and wanted to make sure not only about the quality of our product but also that IPG had confidence in their ability to sell our books, impressed me greatly. That level of caution and commitment is why they have been successful and fiscally sound all these years. That’s the type of company I want to do business with! I’m excited about this new partnership and can’t wait to see where God takes it as we move into full-swing.”

“IPG is very pleased to partner with such a well-established and respected publisher of Christian fiction,” said Mary Rowles, Publisher Development Manager for IPG.  “We were immediately impressed with the professionalism of the organization and the quality of the Pelican Book Group list. We look forward to introducing these books to the wider general audience they deserve.”

Joe Matthews, CEO of IPG, stated, “Pelican combines the new world of social media savvy and niche marketing with traditional, long-term author development.  Their books are well-edited with terrific production values.”
Among the first of Pelican’s 2016 full-length titles to be distributed by IPG are two novels from debut authors, and the next installment in the “Blithe Settlement” series from veteran reader-favorite, Deborah Pierson Dill.

About Independent Publishers Group:
Established in 1971, IPG was the first organization specifically created for the purpose of marketing titles from independent presses to the book trade. With consistent growth each year, IPG’s success has come from supporting and encouraging the growth of its client publishers in the United States and worldwide. as a wide reach in the market with its distribution of publishers with academic, Spanish-language, computer and general trade nonfiction and fiction titles. IPG was acquired by Chicago Review Press in 1987. Clients include publishers from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Israel, Spain and other countries. In the fall of 2006, the senior management of Chicago Review Press, Inc., the parent company of IPG, bought Trafalgar Square Publishing, Inc., the leading U.S. distributor of UK publishers. Trafalgar Square Publishing was founded in 1973 and distributes for clients such as Aurum Press, Canongate UK, Hodder & Stoughton, Headline, Orion Publishing, Random House UK and Simon and Schuster UK. Visit www.ipgbook.com for more information.

Yes, she loves everything…except her new landlord. Police Chief Sean Taylor is like a piece of sand in an oyster—irritating, but with the promise of something beautiful. Despite Maggie’s self-imposed man-fast, she wonders what kind of treasure she and the lawman could create together. Sean Taylor likes to keep the peace, but his new tenant is making it nearly impossible to keep anything on an even keel—including his heart. Despite her sassy attitude, Sean is drawn to the beautiful pastry chef and has an overwhelming need to serve and protect her. As Maggie and Sean draw closer together, her long buried dreams about her life are reawakened into a hopeful prayer…until a threat from her past promises to destroy their future. Will Maggie be forced to run—again—starting fresh? Or will God answer her prayer and give her the happily-ever-after she’s started from scratch?
“Northern Light” by Annette O’Hare (Historical Romance)
Synopsis: Civil War has robbed Margaret Logan of all she holds dear, including her beloved New Orleans home and her fiancĂ©. When her family moves to the desolate Bolivar Peninsula to manage a lighthouse that is no longer there, all her hopes for a normal future are dashed. Her world is rocked once again when a wounded Yankee soldier washes ashore needing her help. Despite her contempt for the North, Margaret falls in love with Thomas Murphy. As their love blooms, Margaret’s sister is overcome with neurosis, and her mind slowly slips away. Bitterness, psychosis and depression yield a decision fueled by contempt. Will one fatal choice cause Margaret to lose the man she loves and condemn Thomas to death?
“Not so Far Away” by Deborah Pierson Dill (Contemporary Romance)
Synopsis: Laurel Kerr lives each day fearing it could be her last. Years of pleading with God for deliverance from her husband’s deadly temper have convinced her that she’s beneath the Lord’s notice. Still, she perseveres, hoping that a redeemed husband and a Christ-centered marriage might one day be possible. Dr. Boyd Wendall has a soft spot for Laurel. Although she’s not his to take care of, she stirs his protective instincts. Time and again he finds himself in the midst of her trouble, and he can’t help but believe there’s a reason for it.

My Writing Process

When wearing my writing hat, the question I'm asked most often is: 'How do you do it?'

When my good friend and gifted colleague MaryAnn Diorio invited me to join the 'My Writing Process' blog tour, I knew it would be a fun opportunity to provide a response. Thank you, MaryAnn, for including me, and before I dive into my writing world, I want to let you know a little about her!

Dr. MaryAnn Diorio writes compelling fiction that deals with the deepest issues of the human heart. She is Online Adjunct Professor of Fiction Writing at Regent University and the author of A CHRISTMAS HOMECOMING. She is married, the mom of two wonderful daughters, and grandmother to precious 17-month-old granddaughter Annamarie Joy. You can connect with her at: http://www.maryanndiorio.com

Now, it's my turn at the keyboard. I can’t wait to share a bit about my writing process!

What are you working on?

I have two projects in the ‘writing’ stages right now, six projects in the editing/release stages and a proposal in the works for a three-book series.

My writing projects are Forgiveness, coming soon from Harbourlight Books and Nobody’s Baby But Mine coming soon from White Rose Publishing (both imprints of Pelican Book Group). The ones that are in the works are also coming soon from Pelican: my four-book Sisters in Spirit series as well as Date Night and Then and Now.

Tentatively I refer to my future project as The Fishermen Series because their last name is Fisher, and it involves three brothers born and bred in rural Indiana. The series arc reveals the ways God uses them for His mission field in ways that are nothing short of miraculous. I’m excited about diving into the mind-set of these men since I just finished my ‘Sisters’ series!

How does your work differ from others in its genre?

I think my writing differs from others in my genre because I’m determined to tell stories from a Christian world-view and perspective, while all the while challenging myself to keep it real. The conflicts, the messes life (and our choices) can bring to light might appear hopeless at first, and overwhelming, but nothing is beyond God’s power, His love and redemption.

Also, I’m a firm believer in sharing the exhilaration and joy of falling in love—the tummy tickles, the sparkles, the rush of attraction. I’m a bit more sensual (though always appropriate, no worries!) when it comes to my hero and heroine discovering their connection.

Why do you write what you do?

I began my professional career with four secular releases. Three were published by Kensington and one by The Wild Rose Press. All four were contemporary romances because exploring the theme of love resounds with me. It celebrates what’s best about who we are. All the while, though, I felt a pull toward something more, something that delivers the truth of a love that goes much deeper and truer than anything we’ll ever find here on earth, and that’s the love of God through the birth, life, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus.

How does your writing process go?

I have to begin by saying I’m married to a prince. OK, well, actually he’s a king. Seriously. He’s the former king of the Allen County 4-H Fair, and he more than lives up to the title. Every night during the work week I spend an hour or two at my computer, writing, while he cooks dinner. What a blessing and gift to have his unwavering support! I write on my lunch hours as well, but more often than not I use my lunch time to eat, and power walk to keep myself fit.

Beyond that, my weekends are ‘go’ time. I try to treat my writing weekends like a job all their own. I put in eight hours (sometimes more if I’m on a roll). Sometimes I write at home, sometimes I change things up by writing at coffee shops around town. Spring and summer are awesome because I can sit outside and enjoy writing alfresco.

And now, I'd like to introduce next week’s participant in the blog tour. Say hello to Tanya Hanson! Check out her writing process revelations on June 16th!

After a career as a high school English teacher, Tanya Hanson now writes both inspirational and secular Western romances. A native Californian, she thanks God daily for the blessings of good health, a happy home, and exciting travels.Connect with her at: www.tanyahanson.com

Until next time, friends, be blessed!

A Giveaway & Celebrating the Release of By Appointment Only

It's a Sunday after-church tradition. Following Mass, my husband and I head straight to National Coney Island for breakfast. It's a family-style diner. There's dish clatter, a flood of conversation, kids laughing (and crying!) and folks wiping sleep from their eyes as they hunker in with a cup of coffee, some pancakes, or some bacon and eggs.

It's comfort, and comfort food, that's as familiar to us as a sunrise, and we've even gotten to know a number of the waitresses. When my husband had hip replacement, a few of them even made it a point to stop by and chat, wondering how his recovery progressed. I love this place, and it became the inspiration for my Sal's Place Series.

After all, can't you  imagine Jennifer strolling the aisles, taking orders and serving customers with a smile? Sal Cocossa hard at work cooking behind the flat top grill? Luke and Callie West having dinner together? Ryan Douglas stopping in for a quick cup of coffee while patrolling the streets of Detroit?

Today, Sal's Place has a new entry - By Appointment Only! I want you to get to know Matt Bellinger and Heather Cavanaugh - so, to celebrate, I'm giving away an autographed, print copy of Search & Rescue (Book 1) and Beautiful Music (Book 2). All you have to do is leave a comment, talking about your favorite spot to savor down-home comfort food and casual atmosphere. I can't wait to hear from you! Don't worry about reading the series in order, or being lost if you haven't read them all - these are stand-alone romances full of faith, hope, and love.

Giveaway winners will be announced next Saturday right here at the blog, so be sure to check back!

BY APPOINTMENT ONLY  ~ BLURB

Political dynamo Matt Bellinger understands he has an unyielding responsibility to work hard for the betterment of his community and the world around him. Life, he believes, should be built strictly on effort and tangibles, not an elusive faith.

But that belief is challenged when a bill to spearhead volunteerism leads him to canvassing efforts at Detroit's legendary diner, Sal's Place, and a meeting with Heather Cavanaugh. His polar opposite, the street-smart beauty challenges his heart and perceptions. She's the head stylist at Optiva, a trendy, upscale hair salon in downtown Detroit, as well as a tireless volunteer giving back to the city she loves in honor of the God she serves.

Love blooms, gradually shifting Matt's perceptions. But when a life-threatening illness in his family challenges that fledgling faith, will he be able to hold fast to his newfound beliefs? Will he discover that faith makes all things possible and love makes all things beautiful?

BY APPOINTMENT ONLY ~ EXCERPT

Matt made it to the hospital in plenty of time to give Mandy’s untethered arm a gentle squeeze and dot her forehead with a kiss. He loved the way her eyes lit up at the sight of his gift—a big, pink teddy bear with get-well-soon balloons tied to its paws. Once the pre-operative sedative kicked in, Mandy became sluggish, so Matt followed his family out of the room. Only Rick and Stephanie stayed behind.

In the waiting room, the O’Connors and a few couples from Rick and Stephanie’s church that Matt had never met before convened to wait for word from the OR. As a group, they joined hands and murmured a prayer. Matt watched, compelled by the scene, and he thought instantly of Heather, of how readily and easily she had prayed at dinner, just like these people prayed now. She was comfortable with her faith and her beliefs, as well as the pattern of her life.

Matt felt a stab of yearning that had nothing to do with the love he held for Heather. Rather, the ache that swelled through his chest as the prayer session ended stemmed from the fact that he could feel the peace that flowed. He saw it in their eyes and in the more relaxed way they moved.

But he couldn’t taste it for himself. He was an outsider, hungry yet rootless, staring through plate glass at a feast meant to fill and quench.

How, he wondered, could he ever break through?

“Hey there, handsome.”

From behind, that quiet, subdued summons reached his ears…then entered his heart.

Matt spun, face-to-face with Heather who stepped straight into his arms and held on tight.

The love that washed through him was so powerful, words failed.

Sal's Place / Search & Rescue

Welcome to Sal's Place!

Step up to the counter, take a seat and I'll have the waitress pour some coffee while we chat about Search and Rescue.

I've always been fond of family-owned, mom-and-pop style eateries. Setting a series of inspy romances in a time-honored diner located by the Detroit Riverfront speaks of all things cozy and loving. The idea appealed to the foodie in me, and the result is a four-book series from Pelican Book Group called, you guessed it, Sal's Place.

Search and Rescue has just debuted, and I'm dying to give you all the details so you can join the journey ~ I hope you love reading these stories as much as I loved creating them!

So, make yourself at home! Enjoy the blurb and excerpt. Leave me a comment, with e-mail contact info - and you'll be entered to win a $15 gift certificate to Pelican Book Group as well as a personally autographed, print edition of Hearts Communion, Christian Small Publisher Book of the Year in Romance! Winner announced, appropriately enough, on February 14th - Valentine's Day!!!

BLURB:

Holding on for a hero...

Jennifer Foster isn’t one for fairytales. As a source of emotional support for her troubled mother she doesn’t have time.Grounded in the practicality of living day-by-day, the tenderhearted waitress loves to swap food and affection with the regulars at Detroit's legendary diner, Sal’s Place.

When a robbery at the diner sends her life spinning into the capable arms of a Detroit Police officer, Ryan Douglas steps to the forefront of her life, whether she's ready to accept his loving care or not. But Ryan contends with his own set of family difficulties and circumstances that just might overwhelm their fledgling relationship.

Will the blending of their lives, and the love they feel, bring about heartbreak, or will God’s ultimate plan be allowed to play out, and bring them both to a point of acceptance, and love’s embrace?

EXCERPT:

“Hey, Sal, Mrs. Peterson’s sending back her order of spaghetti.” Jennifer Foster put a touch of spin on the rejected plate when she slid it across the metal dividing shelf between the kitchen and service areas. “She says she wants her noodles al dente.”

Sal Cocossa scowled. He planted his fists on hips covered by a speckled white apron. “Seriously.”

“She called it a pile of mush, but go easy. She’s having a bad day. Mr. Peterson’s back in the hospital.”

Sal’s expression immediately eased. “Is it his heart again?”

Jennifer nodded.

“So, you talked to her?”

"For the past couple minutes. Poor thing. She’s pretty much a wreck about it.”

“Fifty years of marriage tend to act on a person that way.” Sal gave a nod and returned his attention to the stove, sliding and jiggling a sautĂ© pan full of caramelizing green pepper and onion, a generous heap of crumbled, homemade sausage, and diced garlic cloves. “I’ll take care of the replacement.

"Thanks, Jenny-Lynn. You’re good people.”

Jennifer adored sixty-year-old Salvatore Cocossa, III and let him know it in the way she fluttered her lashes and smiled into his eyes. “Thanks, boss. Let’s give her al dente…and hope she doesn’t dente her teeth when she crunches into it.”

The quip inspired a spontaneous burst of Sal’s rich, chesty laughter. The reaction warmed Jennifer through.

A moment later, Sal called out the new spaghetti order then scooped up a whisk and lifted a metal bowl, scrambling up some eggs, back to work in the kitchen—master of the legendary diner, Sal’s Place.

Sal’s Place was an old fashioned, family-owned diner located on the Detroit riverfront. The restaurant had claimed its spot on the roadmap of Motown ever since the roaring twenties. Back then, Sal’s great-grandfather had opened and operated the restaurant. In those days, the juggernaut that was the industrial age had lifted Detroit to greatness and times weren’t just good—they were spectacular.

Jennifer’s glance touched upon black and white photos that chronicled the history of the diner. After ten years at Sal’s Place, she knew them by rote. The visual timeline crossed the walls like a history quilt. Her subsequent glance through the windows of the eatery told a much sadder story. Decayed buildings were barely lit against a fast descending early-autumn evening. Intermittent headlights from infrequent cars flashed against dingy bricks; some of the masonry was decorated by graffiti. To say this proud, tough city had fallen upon hard times would be gross understatement.

Battling a swell of sadness, Jennifer pulled away from the blight and returned her focus to the warm, bright atmosphere of the diner. She thought about Mrs. Peterson and sadness turned into compassion. The food at Sal’s Place was top rate; Jennifer knew there was nothing wrong with Sonya Peterson’s order, but she also realized the overburdened, elderly woman had suffered much lately. Sonya needed understanding—and a healthy dose of good fortune. Jennifer knew the feeling, so she championed the idea of cutting this warmhearted regular a bit of slack for ornery behavior.

Awaiting the new plate of food, Jennifer took in the crowd. She checked the lineup of full tables on this Saturday night. There were plenty. Then she automatically tracked back to the front door, where a line of customers were queued to be seated. The place was jumping.

She took note of two uniformed men standing at the head of the line. Glimmering silver chest badges identified them both as members of the 3rd Precinct of the Detroit PD. They were vaguely familiar—semi-regulars. Being a hometown girl, Jennifer knew there was no more gritty form of serve and protect imaginable. Crime prevention—in downtown Detroit? Her problems amounted to nothing by comparison to what these men must witness each day. Her pulse quickened in automatic reflex. Talk about nobility in the face of daunting odds.

Besides, what was it about a handsome man in a uniform?

One in particular captured her focus and held it fast. He was the taller one, who sported the stripes of a Sergeant, short raven hair and a strong, solid build. He looked her straight in the eyes then quirked his lips in a deliberate form of acknowledgement. The reaction left Jennifer to wonder if he hadn’t somehow heard the exchange with Sal.

Her brows furrowed and the striking, mahogany-eyed man gave her a nod. Something in the undercurrents of that innocent moment left Jennifer acutely aware of herself. She flushed head to toe beneath his lingering regard and promptly looked elsewhere. Snagging a coffee pot—decaf due to the time of day—she prepared to make the rounds and return for Sonya’s plate once Sal called her table ticket. It’d be best, she figured, to move on to more worthwhile pursuits than ogling.

Still, while she moved through the restaurant, Jennifer watched Celia, their long-time hostess direct the two officers toward a booth. Sure enough, they ended up at one of Jennifer’s stations. Expectation danced along her nerve endings. Determinedly she doused that reaction and clutched the handle of the steaming glass carafe. Heat stemmed from nothing more than a temporary flame of infatuation, she thought, a headiness derived from the impact of a crisp, royal blue uniform. Or, maybe it was all that tough muscle juxtaposed against those warm eyes and that soft, knowing smile…

The officers sat. When the object of Jennifer’s admiration happened to look her way, she caught her breath and spun away fast, grateful she didn’t believe in mental telepathy. Strangely enough, though, being watched by the man left her feeling as though she had landed dead-center of VIP radar…if only for a moment or two.

Well, she thought ruefully, so much for not ogling.

Intrigued?? I sure hope so! Here's where you can find Search & Rescue:

The Next Big Thing - Finding Home!

I was blog tagged by Lynn Willis who was invited to participate in The Next Big Thing! So here we go...the answers pertain to my soon-to-be-released Christmas romance, FINDING HOME (Pelican Book Group, December 2012)

Where did the idea come from for the book? That’s easy! My longing to return to London! I’ve been twice, and both excursions were fabulous. I wanted to write about a Dickens-style Christmas brimming with tradition, love and beautiful surprises!

What genre does your book fall under? Inspirational romance

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition? Hmmmm…wouldn’t that be incredible?? I can easily see Charlize Theron as the sparky, yet vulnerable Alexa and John Cusack as the debonair yet spicy Peter Royce Colby…

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? Sometimes, leaving home is the only way to find where you belong.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency? Finding Home releases in December from the absolutely fabulous White Rose imprint of Pelican Book Group.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript? Finding Home literally flew from my fingertips – I was so inspired and motivated to write a Christmas romance set in London! Additionally, it’s amazing with a deadline will accomplish…LOL!!!

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? If you love Christian inspirational romance, I think you’ll adore Finding Home.

Who or What inspired you to write this book? I loved the idea of taking a bruised heart (Alexa) and mixing her life with that of a friend from her college days when she studied abroad in England. I adore London and look forward to returning to that magical city at some point soon – writing Finding Home satisfied my yen to hop the pond!

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest? At its heart, Finding Home is a fun, frolicking, heart-felt romance. If you’re in the mood to take a brief break from the holiday settle back by the fireplace with a romance that will stir your senses and take you on a mini-vacation to England, I think this story is just the ticket (pardon the pun!!) Hope you enjoy!

Thanks so much for dropping by! Now, I’m going to pass the baton to these five great authors. I hope you'll check out their blogs, too.

Tag, you’re “it,” ladies, and enjoy the pleasure of being “THE NEXT BIG THING!”

Become DEVOTED!!

*****

Powerful. Emotional. Moving. Touching. Awakening. These are just a few of the words that come to mind when I reflect on Devotion. Throughout this very true-to-life story, master story-teller, Marianne Evans, creates a believable and relatable situation between a husband and wife who have naturally become comfortable in their marriage . . . and the consequences of allowing the temptation of new passion to burn brighter than the flames of true love.

What struck me while reading this book is that while everyone enters a marriage with the best of intentions, no one is immune or above the throws of temptation. In fact, it’s usually in the area where we Christians are the strongest that Satan will try to sneak in and destroy us. Satan loves division, loves to tear the family apart, and too often he is successful.

However, this book also beautifully illustrates what restoration can occur when the mistakes and failures in our lives are completely turned over to Jesus. Through Him, true forgiveness happens and where families were once broken true healing occurs. Marianne Evans illustrates this truth so eloquently.

I recommend this book to anyone who is hungering for an amazing story of redemption from human weaknesses and the restoration of relationships that mean the most. I highly recommend this story to married couples to read together as a reminder of what is most important in life and how one moment of weakness can put it in jeopardy. But Devotion is a MUST READ for every couple struggling with the pain and betrayal of infidelity. Through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, THERE IS HOPE. Thank you, Ms. Evans, for sharing this hope with everyone who reads Devotion and for reminding your readers of the truth that true love really can conquer all. ~Jen Stephens, author of The Heart’s Journey Home and The Heart’s Lullaby

*****

Marianne Evans has written a touching story that will leave readers breathless. She has such a gift for the written word. ~ Mary Manners, Award winning author of Wisdom Tree, Tender Mercies, Light the Fire

*****

Marianne Evans has crafted an outstanding, beautifully written and compelling tale of love, loss and second chances. Devotion opens a window to see what can happen when you become complacent in your marriage. It shows the effects of not listening to God's still small voice. It spells out clearly that sin does not just affect the one committing it.

One verse that kept coming to mind while I was reading was Proverbs 23:7 'whatsoever a man thinks in his heart, so he is'. Don't entertain inappropriate thoughts! That's why the Bible is clear about guarding our hearts because out of it flow the issues of life.

Devotion is more than just a story, it's life-changing fiction and one I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND! It’s just what today’s world needs to hear. ~ Sherry Kuhn, Reviewer, Love2Read Novels

An Excerpt from DEVOTION.......

The church space sang to Juliet in a holy silence that wrapped around her like a welcome embrace. She knelt to pray, heedless of the fact that there were no kneelers in the pews of Trinity Christian. The hard tile floor felt good beneath her knees, and somehow grounding.

“God, what did I do wrong? We didn’t argue, we didn’t fight, we moved forward together in our marriage. Why did he leave it behind? How was that even possible for him? How did I fail him? And You?”

She sobbed openly, speaking the words aloud, heedless of being overheard. The space was empty anyhow. She laid her head on her folded hands trying desperately to bring herself to a new understanding of her life.

My promises are unchanging truth, and life. Your faith will save you. Go forward in peace, and be cured of your affliction.

The words, the glimpse of sacred Scripture, resounded through the entirety of her being. The decree swept through her with such power she went straight, tears drying on her cheeks as she blinked, and assimilated. Had she not already been on her knees, the summons would have knocked her there like the weakened heap of humanity she had become. She pondered. Go forward? In peace? How was she supposed to accomplish that? In prompt, near supernatural response, she received the answer.

Know that I am God, Juliet. Know that I am God.

She bowed her head, drained and empty, submitting herself as best she could. Just then, the sound of footsteps echoed down the main aisle.

“Juliet?”

The call jarred her. She whipped her head around and gasped at what she saw. Kellen.

Kellen?

Did she simply think his name, or had she spoken it aloud? Stunned and overwrought, Juliet scrambled to her feet. In an untidy spin, she faced her husband. Just as quickly, she went weak, sinking onto the pew just a second or two after standing. She didn’t need a mirror to tell her that her makeup was smeared and her hair was a mess. She knew by the heat in her cheeks that her face was flushed; her eyes were probably red from crying. Kellen’s alarmed expression confirmed every one of her suspicions.

"Juliet, are you OK? Please talk to me. This is driving me crazy. What’s happened to you, love?”

Love. The use of that endearment caused her stomach to churn. Anger rose and obliterated everything else. “Don’t.” Kellen’s confusion intensified. “I mean it, Kellen. Do not call me that again. Not ever again!” She bit off the words; their bitter taste filled her mouth.

He reared back. Although he hesitated for a moment, he eased into the pew next to her. A mask of sorts, protective and inscrutable, now shaded his eyes. He didn’t speak. He waited on her, keeping to his corner of the pew. Juliet simmered and seethed. Just as quickly, though, the anger fled, washed away by a wave of sadness that stretched clear through to every cell in her body.

"This moment is killing me, Kellen, on so many levels. I’ve dreamed about it since the day we married, imagining it to be bursting with joy and anticipation. Instead, it’s breaking my heart."

“What moment? What happened?” Generally fearless and confident, Kellen regarded her now in open trepidation. “I have no idea what to do to hel—”

"I’ll never have another chance to say this to you for the first time,” Juliet interjected, “or share this moment with you the way I had always envisioned. I’m pregnant, Kellen. I’m pregnant.”

A mix of emotions swept across his face. Disbelief came first, erased quickly by joy, then the most crushing visual of all: his love, intimate and rich. It had once made her feel so precious. Despite her vocal firestorm, his reaction was everything she had prayed for. This moment should have made her heart soar. Instead, she was shattered.

“You seem shocked.” The words came out sounding waspish. Juliet hated that fact, but couldn’t escape the rage and heartbreak. The venom inside her needed release.

“I’m very happily shocked.” His response came fast, but sincere. “We’ve wanted this for so long, I’m thrilled—no wonder you’ve been feeling—”

"I’m sure you’ll remember the night it happened.” Juliet cut him off once more. “It was spontaneous and heated and wonderful. Remember? There were no thoughts of anything else but each other. Or so I had believed. But if you do the math, you’ll realize we conceived the night you met Chloe Havermill.”

Kellen went pale.

I'm Devoted...Are You?

I'm Devoted.
I'm devoted to the ideal of Christian of marriage--marriage that is a covenant, not just a contract one enters into lightly, and dissolves with ease at the first sign of dissilusionment, pain or....betrayal.
The principals of Christian marriage, when its foundation has been rocked, is what I explore in the pages of my Christian fiction debut, Devotion (releasing October 15th from Harbourlight Books). Here's a bit about the book:
From This Day Forward
Christian Music agent Kellen Rossiter has everything he ever wanted: A-list
clients from coast to coast, a loving wife who honors and respects him, and a
faith life that’s never wavered—until now.
Juliet Rossiter has the perfect life: a rewarding schedule serving the
underprivileged, a husband who loves her as Christ loved the church, and a
blessed future as a mother—at least that's what she thinks.
For Better or Worse
But what happens when their rock-solid marriage begins to crumble under the
weight of an unexpected and powerful temptation? How does love survive when its
foundation is shaken?

'Til Death Do Us Part
When human frailty and the allure of sin deal a harsh blow to their
relationship, it will take more than love to mend the shattered trust and
heartbreak. It will take a lifetime of devotion.

Are you intrigued? I hope and pray that Kellen and Juliet's journey will minister to your heart. Devotion is available for pre-order as a featured title in the Pelican Book Group Fall Preview event. Order it now and you'll receive substantial savings off the cover price, plus, you'll be entered to win a Kindle or Nook. Here's the link: PELICAN BOOK GROUP FALL PREVIEW

New & Exclusive Hearts Key Excerpt!

Come on in and cozy up!! I want you to meet Tyler Brock and Amy Maxwell in this exclusive excerpt from Hearts Key!! (and hopefully it'll tempt you to purchase this wonderful White Rose Publishing romance right here!!!!)

With that, off we go to the cool, azure waters of Lake St. Clair......and a leisurely boat ride....

*************

Pastor Ken had tuned the radio to WMUZ, the Christian station in Detroit. A Britt Nicole song, Hanging On, drifted through the air. “Here's what I know about post-highschool Amy Maxwell—” his voice was a slow and gentle leading. Amy knew at once this conversation was headed places. Big places. “—I know you ended up marrying Mark Samuels.”

She had no excuse to hide her eyes. Tyler’s position next to her blocked the blinding orb of the
sun. Still, she reached for her sunglasses, and cleared her throat again as she did so. Tyler took hold of her wrist to still the motion before she could follow through. In emphasis, he slipped his thumb against her skittering pulse point in a light, but deliberate stroke.

“Don’t put up a guard, Amy. Relax.” The stroke continued, lulling. Assuring somehow. “Just talk to me.”

She watched him, Tyler Brock, shadowed and framed against a pure blue sky. She refused to go tense and bitter with memory; she refused her past that kind of subtle victory. And so, she confessed to the worst of it. “I divorced him, too. Best to get that out in the open, I suppose.”

“My folks told me as much. I’m so sorry, Amy. I don’t care how many years have passed, I know who you are, and I know for certain that kind of decision did not come easily to you. What happened, honey?”

The earnest question, the naturally delivered endearment, coasted into her blood stream and stirred up an emotional flood. Instantly she was carried away, her heart delivered to a place where she could reveal herself, and not fear for the consequences.

Patient and steady, he waited, watching her. She lay prone, oddly relaxed in contradiction to the increased tempo of her blood. She needed to see how close Pyper might be, and determine if she was within hearing distance. Amy lifted just far enough to see that her daughter was happily occupied by the companionship of the Brocks, who were presently being charmed out of a sandwich and some grapes.

Assured, Amy laid back down, tilting her gaze toward Tyler. “He…” Amy took in a breath. Like
ripping off a sticky bandage, she came clean all at once, in a quiet, defeated voice. “He abused me, Tyler. Physically and mentally. And he took out a lot of his anger on Pyper, too. He’d startle her with unexpected, unwarranted spankings, he’d scream at her to be quiet whenever she cried, and he’d yell at the both of us for no good reason. Everything he did just seemed to scare
her all the more. He couldn’t hold a job, so his frustration grew by the day—and so did his use of
alcohol as a way of escaping it all. When he started hitting me, I left.” She shook her head. “And when I say I left, I mean there’s absolutely nothing left of my old life. He saw to that quickly and efficiently.”

She was so carried away by the admission, so wrapped up in the pain of a past she fought to move past every day of her life, she didn’t realize until then that Tyler regarded her with steel‐like eyes and a clenched jaw. Automatically Amy reached up, wanting to apologize for upsetting him. She stroked his chin and shook her head, whispering, “Hey…hey…I’m
sorry…”

Tyler flinched. “Stop.” He closed his eyes, taking deep breaths. “You mean to say he physically hurt you? Physically harmed you and Pyper?” All Amy could summon was silence, and a nod. “Gimme a sec.”

Tyler seemed to lose his battle with control. He growled out a sound and sat up abruptly. A startling beam of sunlight crossed against Amy’s face. She shaded her eyes. Tense seconds swirled past, so she reached for her sunglasses and slid them on. Moving into a sitting position, she slowly drew up her legs then encircled them with her arms. She rested her chin on her knees, watching him. Waiting, protectively sinking in upon herself.

“I can’t even find it within myself to pray for him right now,” Tyler whispered tightly, looking out across the water. In the face of his desolate, troubled admission, Amy ignored a round of laughter that came from their cruise mates, the song switched from Britt Nicole to a Point of Grace classic.

“No. Not right now. But you will. It took me a while, too.” When tense silence lengthened, she began to worry. “Tyler, talk to me. Please? What are you thinking?”

“That Mark Samuels doesn’t deserve one precious second of the time God gave him with you, and that wonderful little girl.”

Typical Tyler Brock. He was never, ever afraid to speak his heart. That was the beauty of him. Just like the words and melodies of his music, he laid it all out there and withheld nothing. Oh, how she admired that bravery of spirit.

Once, she had been the same way, but she had never been smart when it came to matters of the heart. Instead, she had opted to keep Tyler playfully enamored, a friend but nothing more while she chased after the bigger, better deal. Well, woe unto her. “I paid the price for being star‐struck by the popular guy, the guy everyone admired. In theory, he was Mr. Right. In
practice he turned into Mr. Devastation.” She pursed her lips, and looked at her daughter. “And you’ve seen how hard it is on Pyper when it comes to adult men. It leaves me sick at myself sometimes.”

Tyler leaned in and captured her chin gently in his hand. He looked intently into her eyes. “Don’t ever, ever take responsibility for a man abusing you and your daughter, Amy. You’ve pulled sunshine out of the rain. Do you understand that?”

Hearts Key & The Woodland Series Wrap Up

I have to admit it...I'm equal parts elated and sad. Hearts Key releases on November 4th...what a cause for celebration! Hearts Key is book 4 of my award-winning Woodland Series, and these characters took on a life of their own (in fact, secondary characters you meet in this book have spun their way into my Christian fiction debut with Harbourlight Books - Devotion!)

The sad part is, Hearts Key brings a close to a very special place in my heart: Woodland Church.

I can see its gleaming brass steeple, its waterfront location, so clearly in my mind, despite the fact that this church is fictional. I can see it's parishioners as if they are walking straight through the double door entryway... There'd be the entire Edwards clan, with Collin and Daveny...Pastor Ken Lucerne and his gorgeous wife Kiara...the sassy and sparky JB and Monica Edwards...they've all brought me to laughter, and to tears. I've rejoiced in their victories and feel like I've walked a journey right along with them.

Now it's time for the wrap up - and what better story to tell than that of love refound after trials, hardships, and even successes beyond imagining...

In the pages of Hearts Key, you'll meet Tyler Brock and Amy Maxwell - I hope you fall for them as hard as I did. And I bet your heart will be utterly stolen by that precious little cutie-pie, Pyper!

BLURB:

Life hasn't been kind to Amy Maxwell. Once the effervescent leader of the pack, her marriage should have been perfect. Instead, she escaped with nothing but the clothes on her back and her daughter, Pyper.

Tyler Brock is dazzling. The once shy teen has evolved into a powerhouse in Christian music, and when he returns to Woodland for a benefit concert, Amy can’t believe he is as faithful and tender as ever. He even manages to touch the heart of a doubtful Pyper.

But, Amy can’t escape her own self-doubt, and she questions the wisdom of her heart when it comes to the charismatic musician who is so different now, yet so much the same.

Can the key to their hearts unlock a lifetime of love?

EXCERPT:

The after-concert crowd ebbed and flowed around Tyler like a tide. He stood comfortably amidst it all, his arm looped around his mom’s waist, his father nearby as well. Back home again.

If only it were that easy.

Amy took a deep breath. It was time to move forward, and act like the friend she had always been. She made progress toward approaching Tyler, watching as he shook hands with members of his crew and received enthusiastic hugs of support. Then in came Rebecca. He saw her immediately and grinned while she made a dash for his ready embrace. She gave a happy shout as he lifted her up, and spun her in a full circle.

“You were great,” she enthused, her voice touched by the cadence of the south. “Honestly, what a show!”

“Inspired, wasn’t it, Becs? It feels so good to be home!”

Rebecca pecked both his cheeks and smiled into his eyes. Amy’s heart sank. His dynamic backup singer then greeted others around them and dissolved into the crowd of tour staffers. Amy winced, battling off turmoil, self-doubt, and inadequacy.

It was a battle she lost.

In that instant, her mature, straightforward intentions vaporized. Hiking up her purse and camera strap, Amy kept a tight hold on them both as she turned to leave. She took a few steps toward the exit. She’d beg off tomorrow’s dinner, and bid this entire, world-rocking episode farewell. In the morning, everything would be back to normal. In the morning, she could—

“Seriously?”

Amy froze at the sound of the smooth and deep voice that carried with it just a touch of the South. She closed her eyes, and she trembled. Bad.

“You were seriously gonna leave without sayin’ hello to me?”

She couldn’t pull in a proper breath. Her heart skittered wildly. Red-hot heat crawled up the skin of her neck and ignited her cheeks, melting and burning in one fell swoop.

Bravely she turned around, her lips pressed tight, though she fought through it all to offer a tentative smile. “Hey, Tyler.”

It was the best she could manage. His eyes were unspeakably gentle and tender. His attitude of warmth so typical of the Tyler she had known, once upon a life. Amy welcomed that fact, and at the same time, she was swept away by just looking at him.

“Hey, Amy,” he greeted softly. His smile bloomed when he took her hands. A beat later, he drew her in for a long, tight hug that left her aching. He felt so hard, and strong. So wonderful. A lump formed fast in her throat—a bit of mourning, she supposed, for all she missed.

“I, ah, didn’t want to interfere or anything.” As soon as the words crossed her lips, she realized how lame they sounded.

Tyler kissed her cheek, and Amy went a bit dizzy. A bit weak at the knees. “You couldn’t interfere if you wanted to.” He leaned back and drew a fingertip against her chin; he looked deep look into her eyes. “I’ve missed you.”

COTT - Tournament of Champions - I'm in the Finals!

Guest post by Jennifer Slattery

Last week, Clash of the Titles launched their first annual Tournament of Champions with two clashes and four talented authors. In Clash one, CS Lakin, author of Someone to Blame, and Marianne Evans, author of Heart Crossing, went head-to-head in a nail-biting, literary duel. In Clash two, our very own Gail Pallotta, author of Love Turns the Tide, competed against Clare Revell, author of A Season for Miracles. All four excerpts rocked, and this was a tough call, but you, our faithful readers chose two Tournament of the Champions' finalists.

Those finalists were Marianne Evans and Gail Pallotta.

Exciting stuff, and yet, the games weren’t done. In the next round, COTT staff cast their votes, and once again, one writer rose to the top and will advance to the next round.
That author is…

Marianne Evans!

And here’s a glimpse of what a COTT champion excerpt looks like:

“Collin Edwards stood before the funeral assembly. Heat crawled up his body. He clutched the edges of the podium where he stood and cleared his throat. The gesture was in vain. His throat constricted so much it hurt. Before the altar, just to the right, rested a flag-draped casket.
He looked down, at a piece of paper upon which he had crafted the words to a eulogy…” (Read more of Excerpt B here.)

About the novel, Heart Crossing:

Collin Edwards, a former parishioner at Woodland Church, has renounced God without apology, his faith drained away in the face of a tragic loss.
Daveny Montgomery cares deeply about her relationship with God, and the community of Woodland . Lately though, she's been in a rut, longing for something to reignite her spiritual enthusiasm.
A beautification project at Woodland seems the answer for them both. Daveny spearheads the effort and Collin assists, but only with the renovations, and only because he wants to know Daveny better. Despite his deepening feelings for her, even stepping into the common areas of the church stirs tension and anger.
Can Daveny trust in Collin’s fledgling return to faith? And can Collin ever accept the fact that while he turned his back on God, God never turned his back on him?
We’d also like to congratulate our prize-winning readers:

Jessica R Patch! She won a $10 Amazon Gift card from Elaine Cooper.

LoRee Peery! She won a free bookmark design from Delia Latham.

Larry Hammersley! He won a $10 Amazon Gift card from Author Anne Patrick.

Join us this week for more fun and prizes as four more authors jump into the ring hoping not only to advance to the next round, but ultimately reign as the Clash of the Titles’ champion of champions! Remember, every vote counts! Each vote gets your name thrown into the hat for our fab-tabulous grand prize give-away comprised of fourteen novels!

Visit our Tournament of Champions page for a complete list of prizes.
